On August 10, around 3 p.m. when the temperature dropped a little, I went to Arakawa River for the first time.
I’ve never been to Arakawa River, so I imagined how terrible the environment of the river is.

At the water’s edge, there are lots of plastic bottles and big pieces of plastic garbage. Then, I saw colorful soil so I looked at this carefully what it is …
It was not soil, but it was countless MICROPLASTICS!!

There are microplastics of various colors like clear, blue, green, and red one. When I saw them, I felt picking up big plastic garbage like plastic bottles is a kind of easy, but it is quite difficult to collect all the small pieces of microplastic. And I recognized the importance of picking up plastic garbage before it become fine, then microplastic.

Besides, there were dangerous garbage like oil lighters or syringes with needles in the plastic garbage. The situation I saw was many times worse than I knew through TV or movies.
Indeed, SEEING IS BELIEVING.
Also, when you collect plastic garbage, be careful not to get hurt.

Moreover, I gathered small crabs around Arakawa River. I never thought I would gather crabs on the first day of my internship 🙂

I struggled with it, and I could pick up just three crabs, but thanks to Imamura-san who I went there together, we could gather 20 crabs, which was a quota of this time.

This time was valuable experience for me to grasp how serious this issue is, and it was a good start of my internship.
